ghosts (for him but mostly for me) is a single channel video installation that features a CRT tv playing old VCR tapes with an image of two figures burned into the screen. The figures burned into the screen an old photograph of myself and my uncle who recently passed away. This piece was created as an homage to my memory of him. The VCR tapes comprises of shows we used to record and watch together, a fond and significant memory that we shared during my childhood. This piece seeks to explore Siegfried Kracauer’s criticism of photography in which he speaks of the detriment of photography’s inherent tie to the referent. He asserts that the subject is reduced to mere details and therefore unable to communicate the memory of the person. As one image is presented on top of another they compete against each other for the viewers’ attention; alluding to the difficulty in memorializing a person through photo alone.
